Rayson HydroShield WE40

Rayson HydroShield WE40 is a two-component, water-based epoxy used as a self-priming primer-and-topcoat system on concrete, screed, asphalt and metal — including damp surfaces.

Best for

Best for coloured seal coats on warehouse floors, production areas and car park decks in normal to medium-heavy service, especially where low odour is required.

Overview

HydroShield WE40 is a water-dilutable two-component epoxy that works as its own primer and topcoat — one product, applied in successive coats, takes the floor from prepared concrete to a finished coloured seal coat. That self-priming simplicity cuts product count and programme risk on straightforward floors.

The formulation offers good hiding power, high mechanical properties and good anti-corrosive resistance, with excellent adhesion to mechanically prepared surfaces — pull-off strength exceeds the cohesive strength of the concrete itself. It tolerates dry or damp substrates, which suits ground-bearing slabs and tropical humidity.

Being water-based, WE40 is suitable for use in unventilated areas, making it a practical choice for basement car parks, enclosed plant areas and occupied buildings where solvent products cannot be used.

Recommended uses

  • Coloured seal coats on cementitious screeds
  • Warehouse flooring and production floors in normal to medium-heavy exposure
  • Car park deck coatings
  • Self-priming primer-and-topcoat systems on new and existing concrete

Suitable substrates

  • New and existing concrete (minimum 28 days old, moisture content below 5%)
  • Cementitious screeds, including highly absorbent substrates
  • Asphalt
  • Metal (mechanically prepared)
  • Dry or damp surfaces (no standing water)

Key benefits

  • Self-priming — one product serves as primer and topcoat
  • Water-based and suitable for unventilated areas
  • Applies to dry or damp surfaces
  • Good hiding power with high mechanical properties and anti-corrosive resistance

System position: Standalone coating

A standalone product performs its job in a single application rather than as one layer of a multi-coat system.

Application method

  • Roller
  • Brush
  • Airless spray

Technical information

The figures below are a guide for planning. Site conditions and workmanship affect results — confirm the details for your project with our technical team.

Coverage 6–8 m² per kg per coat, varying with substrate condition
Mixing Two pre-weighed parts, mix ratio 4:1 (A:B) by weight; mix mechanically for at least 2–3 minutes; pot life up to 30 minutes at 30 °C
Drying & curing Final cure 7 days
Pack sizes Part A 4 kg / Part B 1 kg, or Part A 16 kg / Part B 4 kg per set

Limitations

  • Minimum substrate temperature 5 °C; curing between +10 °C and +35 °C; concrete moisture content maximum 5%
  • Mixed material must be used within its pot life; cures faster in hot weather and in large batches
  • A thin-film seal coat — not intended for heavy-duty impact or thick-build duties
  • Epoxy chemistry — will yellow and chalk under exterior UV exposure

Not suitable for

  • Heavy-duty impact zones needing thick-build screeds or self-levelling systems
  • Exterior UV-exposed surfaces without a UV-stable topcoat
  • Substrates with standing water or moisture above 5%
  • Strong chemical containment areas — use a system matched to the exposure schedule

Recommended systems

Self-priming seal coat system

  1. Mechanically prepare and vacuum the substrate
  2. Apply a first coat of Rayson HydroShield WE40 as the primer
  3. Apply a second coat of Rayson HydroShield WE40 as the coloured topcoat

UV-stable variant for exposed areas

  1. Apply Rayson HydroShield WE40 as primer and body coat
  2. Finish exposed or daylight-flooded zones with Rayson UraForce WB58 for colour stability

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate primer under HydroShield WE40?

Normally no — the first coat acts as the primer and subsequent coats build the finish. Very porous screeds may need an extra priming coat to achieve a full seal.

Is it suitable for basement car parks?

Yes. It is water-based, stated suitable for unventilated areas, and handles the normal to medium-heavy traffic typical of enclosed decks.

Can it be applied to a damp slab?

Dry or damp surfaces are acceptable, provided there is no standing water and moisture content stays within 5%.

How does WE40 differ from WE45?

They are closely related water-based epoxy seal coats. WE45 additionally covers duties such as rubbish chute coatings. Our technical team can advise which suits your exposure.

Will the colour stay stable outdoors?

Like all epoxies it will yellow and chalk under direct UV. For exposed decks, finish with a UV-stable Rayson UraForce polyurethane topcoat.

How many coats does a typical floor need?

Two coats is the usual self-priming build-up; porous substrates may need more. Confirm the build-up for your slab with our technical team.
